Ukai – Portobello Road

How different is Portobello Road without the hustle bustle of Saturday’s Market crowd? You can actually see the wonderful array of colourful houses and eclectic mix of restaurants it has to offer.

One of which is Ukai, a modern sushi restaurant that entices you in with its ambient and serene environment. Despite the large confusing menu, you feel that whatever you end up choosing (which could literally end up being at the very last minute!), it will be good. Peering over the other guest’s plates, Ukai gets at first glance top marks for presentation – yet does this suggest that the food will not actually meet expectation? We were going to soon find out. I went for the Ukai Salad and a portion of Spicy Salmon Sashimi, which I would later add to my salad. The others ordered similarly but chose the Seaweed Salad instead.

When our plates arrived, I truly had a pang of food jealousy as theirs definitely looked better. But once I assembled my salad, I was ready to tuck in and it was definitely worth every mouthful. The dressing is what definitely made it. (The same dressing was used on the Seaweed Salad!)

We ordered the perfect amount and I personally felt satisfied with just my salad and spicy salmon. The portions are just about right. Boys may want to order an extra hand-roll or anything else from the extensive 2-age menu!

They offer a take-away service, too. This is how I first go to know about it – of which the Salmon Miso and Seafood Udon Soup were my takeaway faves. All at very good reasonable prices and service was good (note that the day we went the restaurant was not busy). Highly recommend Ukai if you fancy a chilled but ambient place to eat out.
